Car Alarm Guide

Car Alarms?!?!?
So, you're in this thread which (presumably) means you're pretty interested in getting an alarm for your car. Firstly, why bother getting an alarm in the first place? They cost a decent amount of money and - for most people - your car has never been in a situation where you've wished you had one. Well, while you might have never actually had your car broken into, it's very definitely worth getting a car alarm; if your car ever is attacked by some random off the street, you definitely, definitely want a siren to be going off. It can mean the difference between a broken window and a broken window, ruined interior, stolen headunit or - worst case scenario - a stolen car. In the whole time you have your car and alarm, the majority of the times it goes off are going to be accidental, but for the one time it goes off when something is actually wrong, it's very worth it. If you think your lude is worth more than the cost of an alarm system, then definitely, definitely pay the money for an alarm. Alarms can also have other benifits - take a look at the features section - but their primary use is in deterring thieves.

The three basic alarm types
i) Budget Flashing Light ($1-$10)
What is it: Basically, you want something that might scare a thief away and you don't want to pay any money. You wire up a simple light and capacitor to your car battery (via the cigarette lighter) and bingo! Flashing red light. It barely constitutes an alarm system but it needs to be mentioned. You can make this yourself in about half an hour with a screwdriver and the right components, recommend mounting it on one of the dash blanks (ie, the sunlight sensor space on the right hand side)
Advantages: It's ridiculously cheap (we're talking sub ten dollars)
Disadvantages: Not likely to really convince anyone, and on the offchance they actually break the car there's no sensors/alarm to activate.

ii) Entry level alarm ($50-$400)
What is it: An entry level alarm has some basic features to protect your car for a fairly decent price. You can probably install this yourself (read the insurance section first to see why you might not want to). Generally an entry level car alarm will set you back around $120 dollars, although the price can vary a bit between different units for whatever features you get. Expect an immobiliser, one or two shock sensors and a few remotes; the basic kit can include some other cool sensors, backup sirens and so on. Some also come with sensors for the hood and boot; these are a pretty worthwhile investment if you're worried about someone trying to steal your skis or whatever.
Advantages: Decent protection for your car, still a fairly low price. Widely available.
Disadvantages: Any real pro is probably going to be able to neutralise the alarm. Oh noes! That said, this alarm category is more than enough to deal with your average teenage ice addict.

iii) High end alarm system ($400-$1000)
What is it: A high end car alarm system will set you back a fair bit more than your basic system, but in return you get some really cool features (see the features list). Will have all black wiring, two point immobolisation and all that good stuff; worth paying if you think someone might try and steal your car and you want some extra features while you're installing the alarm system.
Advantages: Heaps of really, really cool features. Possible insurance discounts.
Disadvantages: Costs a mint, and no matter how much you pay, there's no such thing as a foolproof alarm.

Features
While the majority of features are pretty self explanatory, there are some that you might not understand. This section of the Car Alarm Guide goes over the functions of some of those features.
- Anti-Hijacking: An anti hijacking Alarm System will automatically lock your doors when you start the car, and will unlock them when you turn the engine off.
- Code hopping: Changes the transmission code and frequency to stop someone recording the unlocking signal.
- Remote start: Gives you a button on your alarm remote that can start your engine without you in the car. Guaranteed to get you heaps of ladies.
- Two-way remote: The average alarm remote only works from the remote to the car, and can lock/unlock the car, arm the alarm and so forth. A two way remote (or two way pager) can lock the car and so forth, but can also be notified if something goes wrong with the car. This way if someone hits your car you can know about it straight away (provided you're in range - usually about a kilometre).
- GSM Two-way remote: Capable of notifying a designated mobile number via phone call and/or SMS the moment the alarm has been set off.

Insurance
Depending on what car alarm system you have and what insurance company you're with, you can get a discount on your premiums if you have an alarm installed. Usually the company will have three requirements: that it have all black wiring, two point immobilisation and that it be installed by a professional.

Common Brands
Viper
Black Widow
Tenon
Cheetah
Rhino

Where to buy
You can get a car alarm system from pretty much anywhere. A lot of retailers have them (JB Hifi for example) or if you feel brave you can pick one up off ebay.

Score :

14-18 - Hoon hater. There is nothing more that you hate than hoons, and you enjoy watching the news and seeing a hoon get done hard, yelling 'serves you right you bastard' at the TV. Your road etiquette is unparalleled, and your known amongst your mates as being a bit of a grandpa driver. You only ever lost one point and that was for doing 64km/h in a 60 zone.

19-28 - Sensible driver. You drive around with respect for the road and other road users. You have never had someone grab the door handle or pop their feet on the floor as you brake or come into a corner. You do not entertain hoons on the road but have had the odd minor speeding infringement

29- 38 Average. You cop the odd speeding fine, You've never lost your licence before but and you do give the car a good tap here and there. You dont engage in any street racing however have been known to enjoy a bit of 'traffic light grand prix'. You enjoy spirited driving but take it out on the track generally.

39 - 48 - Petrol head. You enjoy your cars, and enjoy thrashing them and showing off. You dont take any shit on the road. You cop your more than average amount of infringement notices and are well and truly used to the cop disco lights behind you to a point where your relaxed with them. You've lost your licence at least once and if you haven't been to court yet you no doubtedly will in the future. You seem to be constantly getting high beamed and yelled at.

49 -56 - Confirmed hoon. You are an outright hoon with no respect for any other road users. Its only a matter of time until you make your claim to fame on channel 9 news. You enjoy bragging about your hoon stories to others and whenever work colleagues hear something on the radio they automatically call you and ask if it was you. Your mother refuses to get into the car with you, and will not give you any more of her points in the hope that you lose your licence. Your insurance is something that increases every year and your car has been impounded before. You have several assault charges against you already.

One of the first Bugatti Veyron crash, wreck, write off

We’ve had plenty of smashed Ferrari Enzos but this is the first on records people have come across images of a wrecked Bugatti Veyron. It’s thought that a pool of water on the road caused the supercar to lose traction and then spin out of control, sending it head first into a ditch. Most of the cabin section and engine compartment look relatively un harmed, however, it’s hard to determine what internal damage to the front end there is if any.
This is the first time a private customer has actually crashed a Veyron. Engineers reportedly wrecked two prototype examples during testing, which was part of the reason for the long delays during the vehicle’s development.

Civic Type R coming to australia

Better start saving lads!
Honda to Bring Civic Type R Down Under

Honda Australia has announced at the Melbourne Motor Show that the high-revving Civic Type R hot hatch will be sold in Australia from the middle of this year.

The “Red-H”-badged three-door hatchback has a 2.0-litre i-VTEC engine with a peak output of 148kW at a dizzying 7800 rpm paired with a six-speed manual transmission. Completing the package, 18-inch alloy wheels ride on low profile “licorice strap” 225/40 tyres.

In keeping with the "Raw-fined" motto of the designers, the Civic Type R matches its blistering on-street credentials with a host of luxury and safety features normally seen in sensible sedans.

Honda Australia Managing Director Toshio Iwamoto said "It is wonderful to bring such a sought after and sporty car to Australia."

"I'm sure all motoring enthusiasts will be impressed with the performance, handling and luxury of the Civic Type R."

"It's the hottest Civic we have ever launched here."

Built at Honda's Swindon plant in Wiltshire, the Civic Type R is a cult car in the UK, with its massive popularity ensuring over 500 customer orders – or 10% of the entire year's sales run – before the official British launch date of March 1st.

Price, full specifications and further details of the Australian version of the Civic Type R will be released closer to the on-sale date.

For Sale signs on cars = a street code for drag-racing

For Sale signs on cars = a street code for drag-racing
I lol'd

Quote:
HOONS and drag-racers will be stopped in their tracks with the introduction of new wheel clamping laws and on-the-spot licence penalties.

Speaking from the Hunter Valley, NSW Premier Morris Iemma yesterday said his government was “clamping down” on anti-social street behaviour - and warned his anti-crime radar wasn’t restricted to drivers.

If re-elected, the Iemma Government will also look to outlaw “for sale” advertising on cars, toughen anti-graffiti laws and trial new court orders restricting the behaviour and movements of juvenile offenders.

His clampdown was announced just hours after idiots on quad bikes mowed down a teenaged girl, leaving her seriously injured - then sped off without stopping. Read more here.

We asked to know how hoons plague your neighbourhood and what you think of this plan - scores of you responded via the feedback form below.

Surrounded by impounded vehicles at a police holding yard in Newcastle, Mr Iemma said his new wheel-clamping laws would take the fight against car hoons to a new level.

“This will literally stop car hoons in their tracks," Mr Iemma said.

“There’s nothing more annoying for local communities than having super-powered cars with booming sound systems racing down local streets at all hours of the night.”

In addition, Mr Iemma said he would investigate outlawing the practice of “for sale” signs on vehicles, for fear it was street code for drag-racing.

Anecdotal evidence linked for sale advertising on cars with those involved in drag racing, and Mr Iemma said this would be investigated further with the possibility of banning the advertising.

Under the new laws, police would have the power to clamp wheels in the driveway of the owner’s home, with the cost of transporting it to the house and the clamping at the owners expense.

A new initiative to toughen anti-graffiti laws and make parents accountable for their child’s behaviour, would protect hard working families of NSW, Mr Iemma said.
